মানুষের ক্ষেত্রে সেক্সয়াল সিলেকশনের অপদ্রব্যগুলো শরীরে নয়, সংস্কৃতিতে নিহিত। সংস্কৃতির বিবিধ উপাদান মানুষের মেটিং স্ট্র্যাটিজিতে ভূমিকা পালন করে। শিক্ষা দীক্ষা, সুস্বাস্থ্য, ধন সম্পদ সহ অনেক কিছুই এখানে অর্নামেন্ট। হীরার আংটি বা সোনাদানা কোন পুরুষের শরীরের ফিটনেস ইন্ডিকেটর বা সুস্বাস্থ্যের সরাসরি প্রমাণ হয়তো নয়, কিন্তু নিঃসন্দেহে পর্যাপ্ত ধন সম্পদের প্রমাণ। এজন্যই ধনী শিল্পপতিরা (অনেক সময় নিজেরা কুৎসিৎ দেখতে হওয়া সত্ত্বেও) সহজেই সুন্দরী এবং আকাংক্ষিত নারীকে ঘরে তুলতে পারেন। সবার পক্ষে সম্ভব হয় না পৃথিবী কাঁপানো কাংক্ষিত নারী যেমন– কেট উইন্সলেট, রানী মুখার্জি, ঐশ্বরিয়া রাইকে ডেট করার। ধন সম্পদ, স্ট্যাটাস এগুলো অবশ্যই বড় ধরনের ইন্ডিকেটর। সেগুলোই বিভিন্নভাবে মানুষের মেটিং স্ট্র্যাটিজি রচনায় কাজ করে। এর পাশাপাশি আছে নিরাপত্তার ব্যাপার। মানুষের মেটিং স্ট্র্যাটিজিতে সুস্বাস্থের পাশাপাশি সবচেয়ে গুরুত্ত্বপূর্ন ফ্যাক্টরগুলোর অন্যতম হচ্ছে নিজ এবং সন্তান সন্ততির নিরাপত্তা। স্বাধীন পরিবেশে একজন নারী সেই পুরুষকেই তার প্রকৃত সঙ্গী হিসেবে বেছে নেয় যে এই সার্বিক নিরাপত্তাটুকু দিতে পারে। এটি প্রতিটি প্রাণীর ক্ষেত্রেও সমানভাবে প্রযোজ্য। যে লোকের ৯ ক্যরটের হীরার আংটি নারীকে কিনে দেয়ার ক্ষমতা আছে,তিনি আর যাই হোক নিরাপত্তাহীনতায় ভোগেন না এবং ক্ষমতা, জৌলুষ এবং প্রভাবের মাধ্যমে নিরাপত্তার গ্যারান্টি তার স্ত্রী এবং সন্তানদেরও দিতে পারবেন বলে সাধারণ ভাবে ধরে নেয়া হয়।‘

১৩৯ অবশ্য দেবেন্দ্র সিংহের গবেষণার ব্যাপারটা আমার কাছেই ভুল মনে হয়। বিশেষত, বাংলাদেশের সিনেমার নায়িকাদের দেখলে মনে হয় না যে তাদের শরীরের মাপ দেবেন্দ্র সিংহের দেয়া গবেষণার সাথে মেলে। আমি এ নিয়ে মুক্তমনায় এ নিয়ে লেখার পর এক পাঠক ব্যাপারটি আমার নজরে এনে বলেছিলেন, “বাংলাদেশের শোবিজের জন্য এই গবেষণা যে খুব একটা কাজের না তা মৌসুমী, শাবনূর, অঞ্জু ঘোষ সহ সব বাঙালি নায়িকাদের দিকে তাকালেই বোঝা যায়”। উত্তরে আমি বলেছিলাম, ব্যাপারটা নিয়ে আমিও ভেবেছি। আমার হাইপোথিসিস হলো– খাদ্যস্বল্পতার সাথে নায়িকাদের ফিগারের একটা সম্পর্ক আছে। আমার কাছে হুমায়ুন আজাদের একটি দুর্দান্ত প্রবচনই সবচেয়ে গ্রহণযোগ্য ব্যাখ্যা মনে হয়েছে–
“ক্ষুধা ও সৌন্দৰ্যবোধের মধ্যে গভীর সম্পর্ক রয়েছে। যে সব দেশে অধিকাংশ মানুষ অনাহারী, সেখানে মাংসল হওয়া রূপসীর লক্ষণ। এজন্যেই বাংলা ফিল্মের নায়িকাদের দেহ থেকে মাংস ও চর্বি উপচে পড়ে। ক্ষুধার্ত দর্শকেরা সিনেমা দেখে না, মাংস ও চর্বি খেয়ে ক্ষুধা নিবৃত্ত করে” (–হুমায়ুন আজাদ, প্রবচনগুচ্ছ)
না ব্যাপারটা মোটেও ফাজলামো নয়। দেখুন চিন্তা করে— বাংলা সিনেমার দর্শক এখনো নিম্নমধ্যবিত্তই, যাদের প্রতিনিয়ত খাদ্যস্বল্পতার বিরুদ্ধে লড়তে হয়। তাদের স্বপ্নের নায়িকারা একটু মোটাসোটাই হবেন আশা করা যায়। দেশের উচ্চমধ্যবিত্ত কিংবা মধ্যবিত্তরা খুব বেশি সিনেমা হলে যায় না। তাদের নাটকের নায়িকারা (সুবর্ণা, বিপাশা, শমি, আফসানা মিমি, প্রভা প্রমুখ)–এরা কিন্তু ঠিক অঞ্জু ঘোষদের আদলের নন, কিংবা ছিলেনও না। আরও লক্ষ করলে দেখা যাবে, পশ্চিমা বিশ্বে খাদ্যস্বল্পতা নেই। বরং সেখানে ম্যাকডোনাল্ডস, বার্গার কিং-এর ফাস্ট ফুড সবচেয়ে সহজলভ্য আর কমদামি। সে সমস্ত খাবার নিয়মিত খেলে ওবিস হয়ে মুটিয়ে যাবার সম্ভাবনা অনেক। সেখানে একটি মেয়েকে খুব কষ্ট করে ব্যায়ামট্যায়াম করে, ফাস্ট ফুডের তেল চর্বি এড়িয়ে, লেটুস, সালাদ খেয়ে নিজের ফিগার অক্ষুণ্ণ রাখতে হয়। পশ্চিমে তাই চিকনচাকন মানে কোমর আর নিতম্বের ০.৭ অনুপাতের মেয়েরাই সুন্দরী হিসেবে নির্বাচিত হবেন, কারণ তেল চর্বির অঢেল রাজত্বে চিকন থাকাটাই একটা বড় ফিটনেস মার্কার। কিন্তু বাংলাদেশে অধিকাংশ লোকের যেখানে আহার জুটে না, সেখানে ফিটনেস মার্কার ‘হাড়গিলগিলে’ হওয়াটা যে হবে না তা বলাই বাহুল্য। এমনকি আমেরিকাতেও নাকি অর্থনৈতিক মন্দার সময়গুলোতে একটু মোটাতাজা প্লেমেটদের আধিক্য চোখে পড়ে প্লে বয়ের ম্যাগাজিনগুলোতে। ব্যাপারটি উঠে এসেছে Terry Pettijohn এবং Brian Jungeberg-এর একটি গবেষণায় (সুত্র– Why men prefer heavier playmates in a recession, Times Online, March 13, 2009)

৩২৫ Greedy reductionism is a term coined by Daniel Dennett, in his 1995 book Darwin’s Dangerous Idea (Simon & Schuster; 1995), to refer to a kind of erroneous reductionism. Whereas “good” reductionism means explaining a thing in terms of what it reduces to (for example, its parts and their interactions), greedy reductionism is when “in their eagerness for a bargain, in their zeal to explain too much too fast, scientists and philosophers[…] underestimate the complexities, trying to skip whole layers or levels of theory in their rush to fasten everything securely and neatly to the foundation.

Also, the analysis of the data showed that young women suffered greater distress after a rape than did children or women who were past reproductive age. According to Randy Thornhill and Craig T. Palmer, the author of the controvesial book, the finding makes evolutionary sense, because it is young women who were at risk of being impregnated by an undesirable mate. Married women, moreover, were more traumatized than unmarried women, and they were more likely to feel that their future had been harmed by the rape. That, too, makes evolutionary sense, because the doubt a rape sows about paternity can lead a long-term mate to withdraw his support.
